About Time Traveller: Heirlooms and Traditions of Gypsies and Travellers in the South West
TravellerSpace supported young Gypsies and Travellers in Cornwall to share their stories of family traditions and heirlooms.
In 2016 and 2017 the young people interviewed someone from their local community about an object that has importance to them or stories from their childhood. On this website you can view all the photographs selected, listen to the full recordings and read our favourite quotes and summaries.
TravellerSpace worked with 32 young Gypsies and Travellers on this project. We helped them prepare for the interview and learn about history, record an interview and chose an object to be photographed that represents the history. 17 of the young people took part in visits to local museums and the County Records Office. The recordings and photographic records will also be deposited in the local Records Office for all to access.

Jean Cullen is an Irish photographer living in Cornwall with her husband and 3 children. Her interests lie in the field of portrait and documentary, where she sets to capture the intrinsic qualities of her subjects, in their element.
Her work is candid in its portrayal and embodies an undisguised and essential raw beauty at it’s heart.
